Thinking that he had just forgotten his key and wanted to work out, Nashali opened the door for the man and continued her workout. Several minutes later, the man approaches and tries to grab Nashali, beginning his terrifying attempted assault.
Luckily the crime was captured on the fitness center's cameras and the man was captured the next day. Along with millions of other proud civilians around the world, we were able to watch the video, and in this article we will break down the important factors that led to Nashali fighting off her attacker and surviving the dangerous assault.
Nashali is one of the toughest people we have ever seen and she demonstrated her resolve before the perpetrator even laid his hands on her.
As the perpetrator is approaching Nashali from the front of the gym she doesn't budge, flinch, or squint an eye; she stands there holding her ground with her body squared up to him.
Before he even makes physical contact with her, Nashali is telling him to not grab her and get away from him - displaying tough verbal defense.
Throughout the 7-minute attack, Nashali demonstrates her toughness by constantly meeting his advances with her defenses and never backing down. From pushing him, to hitting him, to wrestling with him on the ground, there is no doubt that the perpetrator knew Nashali was not going to go down without a fight and that is the spirit that helped keep her safe.
Nashali was aware of the perpetrator from the moment he entered the fitness center and when he decided to make his way to her side of the gym, she again was mindful of his location and behavior.
As the perpetrator slowly made his way toward her, she wasn't trapped under a heavy barbell hip thrusting, nor was she caught squatting 150 pounds - Nashali was ready to defend herself.
If Nashali wasn't aware of the situation, she might've been in the middle of a heavy set and the perpetrator would have had a big advantage, possibly even using the heavy weights against her.
Situational awareness, whether it's conscious observations, or unconscious mindfulness, can give you those extra precious seconds at the beginning of a dangerous situation to mentally or physically prepare to defend yourself.
Maintaining distance is one of the best tips for women's self defense. If a male perpetrator is able to grab you then he can use his size, strength, and body weight more effectively to subdue and attack you. The best way to neutralize this imbalance is to keep him at bay with your hands by either pushing or striking him.
Nashali does this at the beginning of the attack as the man tries to grab her - she pushes away his hands with force. She continues to do this throughout the struggle - whenever the man closes his distance, she either pushes him away, pushes his hands away, or she gears up to strike him.
Using your arms, or legs, to keep distance from a threat is very important in surviving a dangerous physical altercation.
This was one of our favorite defensive maneuvers that Nashali used against the aggressor. She uses a workout bench as a barrier between herself and the assailant.
After his initial advance, she is able to thwart him, and then runs away on the other side of a workout bench so the aggressor wouldn't have easy access to her. He tries to walk around the bench but Nashali smartly keeps the bench between them until finally she sees an opening and makes a run for the other side of the gym.
The lesson here is to use any elements or objects in your environment to keep your attacker at bay. While Nashali could've used the metal dumbbells or curling irons as handheld weapons, there is the inherent risk that the assailant could have disarmed her and used those weapons against her. In Nashali's case, it was her instinct that told her she didn't need to resort to more serious measures and using her mind and body was enough to survive this assault.
Targeting the face of a predator is one of the best ways to fight back during an assault. The face contains important organs like the eyes, nose, ears and mouth that are vital to optimal functioning. By targeting these organs on a predator you can impair his breathing or interfere with his sight. But they are also the most sensitive areas of the body and will produce intense pain sensations which might force him to stop his attack or lessen his abilities.
In the video, we see Nashali unleashing dozens of strikes and punches to the predator's face which clearly disorients him and causes him some pain. Besides the physical impact of her punches to his face, it also send a direct message to the attacker that she is not going down without a fight. Most predators seek easy fights and weak victims so targeting his most vulnerable areas communicates to him that he may have made the wrong choice.
Going to the ground in an assault is one of the worst positions to be in!
We saw a segment from the Tamron Hall Show that says getting close to the male attacker is a smart move so he can't use his longer arms and reach to attack you. This is the exact opposite of what you want to do in an attack! Always try to keep your distance and never let him use his size, weight, and gravity to bring you to the ground and mount you because then your chances of surviving are much lower.
Escaping from the scene and running away from the perpetrator is the smartest thing to do in a dangerous situation. Once Nashali knew that the attacker was disoriented and weakened, she fled the scene. She didn't continue to fight him out of anger or spite. She didn't try to hold him to the ground. She didn't try to call the police while still in the danger zone. She fled as fast as she could once she saw an opportunity.
This is an important self defense lesson for everyone out there. Once the perpetrator is weakened or distracted, and you see a real opportunity, you should flee the scene as fast as possible. Always be mindful and alert to entrances, exits, and windows in your environment so if a dangerous situation were to occur, you can flee without hesitation.
It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog. Nashali was determined to fight for her life and survive, and her willpower didn't let her down. In interviews, Nashali says that she knew she was stronger than her attacker and could fight him off. Now that's confidence for you! The human spirit is an amazing thing and we are glad that Nashali had the determination, confidence, and willpower to fight off her attacker and survive.
Nashali is not your average woman. She stays active, works out, and exercises which undoubtedly helped her survive the attack. Fights are extremely high-intensity and having great strength, conditioning, and endurance gives you a much higher chance to survive.
Nashali also taught us that any women or person can be a survivor. Attacks never happen the same way and there are hundreds of variables that can alter the outcome. Do not assume that if the attacker is bigger, or stronger, or a man, that you can't win. Nashali proved to us that any woman can be a survivor if she fights back even if the perpetrator is bigger than you. So always seize the moment, fight back, and tell yourself not today!

The cardinal sin of being abducted is being put into a predator's car. Once you are put into a car, your chances of survival decrease dramatically.

In addition to never being put in a car, never willingly allow yourself to be moved to another location away from the original location you were attacked (for example if you are attacked on a running path and then moved to the wooded area next to the running path). This will also decrease your chances of surviving dramatically.
The most vulnerable areas on a male attacker are his groin and eyes. If you're being attacked, the goal is to strike these areas and then flee the scene.

When we imagine an "attacker", we typically think of a big, strong, scary figure looming over us. Someone who can easily overpower us and there's nothing we can do to stop them.
However, that isn't always the case. Bad people come in all shapes, sizes, and appearances. This is where martial arts and self defense comes into play.
If your attacker is the same size as you, or if he's slightly bigger than you, then trying to fight him off might be a difficult task if you were untrained.
However learning martial arts and self defense will give you the skills, power, stamina, and experience needed to fight off an attacker that is slightly bigger than you. Any moderate differences in size can be neutralized with proper self defense training.
Don't always assume your attacker will look the same. Martial arts training can help you survive and can end up being the difference in many dangerous situations.
Sometimes the hardest potential to see is our own.
It can be difficult to imagine yourself capable of throwing sharp punches and powerful kicks that can incapacitate a full grown man in one strike.

How long do you have to train to be able to take down a full grown man in one strike?

Prior to taking a self defense class, they may not be able to identify effective potential weapons, but after taking a self defense class they will realize that everyday objects from a chair to a pen, can be used to fight off an attacker.
Deterring a predator from even targeting you in the first place, might be one of the greatest benefits of learning a martial art.
After you've been training in a martial arts class for a bit, you will start to realize that you're getting stronger, faster, more powerful, and better at these skills and strikes. You will start to get comfortable unleashing kicks and punches, and be able to feel the power behind them. A beginner's kick that was once out of your flexibility range and had no force behind it, is now snapped out from your body comfortably and quickly.
As you start to realize your growing physical prowess, your beliefs, mindsets, energy, and presence will also start to change.
You will start to believe that you are not vulnerable or disadvantaged in a dangerous situation. You will begin to think like a fighter and a warrior, and visualize scenarios and how you would act, giving you preparation and calmness if those situations were to arise. You will start to emanate a more confident energy and walk with a more assertive aura, which can be picked up on by everyone around you.
Predators are known to be cowards, and they prey on weaker victims to reduce resistance. As you internalize these beliefs and mindsets, and manifest these strong energies, you will create a powerful presence that deters and discourages potential predators from attacking you in the first place.

Self defense and martial art classes will also teach you important non-contact strategies to deescalate and discourage attacks.
Deescalation is decreasing the intensity, volume, language, intent, or scope in a conflict before it turns to violence.
There are many effective verbal self defense strategies one can use to avoid conflict. Sometimes simply apologizing will reduce the tension in an argument and make the other party feel better. Listening and responding in a calm and understanding manner is another verbal self defense strategy that can prevent violence from occurring. Lastly, by simply telling the other person that you mean no harm and walking away, is sometimes all it takes to show your non-threatening intentions.
We're not trying to promote any untested woo-woo martial arts classes here. Martial arts have been used for centuries by people of less size and strength to fight off offenders that were larger than them.
Aside from the defensive benefits listed above, you'll also improve your physical fitness and health, meet new like-minded people, and learn a new hobby.
Most self defense classes are reasonably priced and have flexible schedules, so there are very few drawbacks to enrolling.
At the very least, most gyms offer a free class or trial period in which you can participate in classes and learn about their school before making your decision.

Scheduling your flight to arrive in the morning or afternoon is always a good idea. If there is an issue with your accommodations, arriving during the day gives you time to find a new accommodation while it’s still light out.
Depending on where you’re traveling to, you may be required to visit a doctor beforehand to ensure you’re in good health to visit, or to receive certain vaccinations and shots.

Our serrated maximalist rings are the most powerful self defense rings we currently offer. To optimize our ring weapon's functionality, we improved two things: the comfort/fit and the blade spine/backbone.
As the largest rings we offer, we first wanted to improve their comfort and fit. We accomplished this by adding curved edges to the outer faces of the ring band. Adding curved edges allows the ring band to rest and rub against your skin without the traditional sharp edges. It also allows for a more comfortable feel when you make a fist for self defense.
The second optimization was for the serrated blade. We increased the depth of the blade spine to give it more girth, and hence more durability and stability. With a larger and stronger backbone, the serrated blade has the teeth to cut zip ties and the power to fight off an attacker.
Our designers at Defender Ring follow two main criteria when creating new ring top designs: one, they must be as minimal as possible to encompass the blade. And two, they must be aesthetic or crafted with a purposeful design.
Our first new maximalist design is Tulip, which is a beautiful ring top featuring a closed tulip flower. Tulip’s shape is as minimal as possible, with the closed flower closely mimicking the shape of the serrated blade to reduce any unnecessary bulk or weight. Our second new maximalist design is Dodecahedron, which is a modern ring top featuring an abstract dodecahedron shape with 12 faces. Due to its integration with sports, tournaments, and competitions, Taekwondo classes focus more on scoring points in these tournaments rather than teaching practical everyday self defense.
Taekwondo does have hand strikes and punches, but they are very rarely taught and practiced compared to foot strikes and kicks. This is because Taekwondo is a tournament and Olympic sport, and in those competitions you can only use kicking and foot strikes. Therefore over the years, Taekwondo has evolved to conform and comply to these rules and most modern day Taekwondo schools heavily emphasize kicking. Improving your leg strikes to fight off an attacker is a great self defense strategy, but there are times when using a hand strike is more effective and practical. For example when you punch someone, both of your feet can remain on the ground giving you more stability and balance. When you kick someone, you're maintaining your stability and balance on only one leg, which means there's a higher chance of falling or being taken to the ground.
Taekwondo also doesn't teach grappling or ground fighting, which are important secondary disciplines for practical female self defence.
Taekwondo schools place a significant importance on "breaking boards" rather than real life sparring with partners. Breaking is important to increase the power, speed, and precision of your strikes, but real life sparring with a partner is more important for practical defense.
If a woman who trained in Taekwondo were to be attacked in real life, she could utilize her martial arts training to defend herself. Upon rebuffing and deflecting the assailant's initial attack, she could then use shin kicks or groin kicks to create distance between the assailant and herself, while also stunning him in the process. If the assailant was incapacitated from the shin or groin kicks, she could then escape and seek help. If the assailant was not yet incapacitated, she could then employ a side kick, front kick, or roundhouse kick to the assailants body to further incapacitate them, and then flee the dangerous situation.

While there are several benefits like learning how to control one’s body during a fight, training to fight from inferior positions, practicing various holds and locks to subdue an opponent, we have to ask ourselves if these should be the only techniques women should learn for a real life street attack.
In a real life attack, women will generally be smaller than her assailant since perpetrators tend to target physically inferior victims to themselves. In a sudden attack, would it be wise for a woman’s first instinct to be to take a larger and stronger assailant to the ground? We don’t think so.
The first fighting instinct and response should be to strike from a distance, fend off your attacker and flee the scene. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu’s first move would be to take the attacker to the ground which is the last thing we’d recommend you do.
We also have to acknowledge that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu may be effective for two opponents of a similar size, weight and strength. The truth is that most of these techniques, holds and locks won’t be as effective on an attacker that is significantly bigger or stronger than you. He’ll simply be able to overpower his way out of a lot of holds and locks.
We also have to understand that BJJ is so popular in the UFC because it’s a closed environment with judges. In the UFC, you can't strike your opponent, flee the scene, and win the fight. You have to stay in the octagon and “defeat” your opponent. In real life, there’s no need for a victim to stay around to “defeat” her opponent. Once your attacker is down, your job is to flee the scene, not finish the job.
While street attacks may end up on the ground, there are steps leading up to the fight being on the ground. We’d prefer to train in a martial art that teaches defending yourself at every step of the way, or one that focuses on the initial steps of a confrontation so you can avoid going to the ground at all, where your chances of survival are much lower.
In a real life street attack, a woman who's trained in BJJ would have the first instinct to grapple her assailant and bring them to the ground. If the assailant has already grabbed you and taken you to the ground, you would be able to fight for position and attempt to hold them or submit them.
Overall, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is one of the best martial arts for ground fighting and teaches students to use positions, angles, and locks, rather than brute force, to defeat their opponent. The idea that you can win a fight from a traditionally inferior position, like on your back, is remarkable, and can be extremely important in a real life street attack. Real life self defense comprises many disciplines, and ground fighting is undoubtedly one of them.
However, a martial art that focuses solely on ground fighting is not going to be the most effective for women. We would recommend taking BJJ with another martial art like Muay Thai that focuses on striking, or to take another comprehensive martial art that covers multiple self defense disciplines like Karate or Kung Fu.
Boxing lands at number 7 on our best martial arts classes, and is a combat sport that focuses on punching. Boxing can be a very effective martial art for female self defence. Its sole focus on punching and striking with the hands means that you will be very experienced, comfortable, and trained at using your hands for fighting off an attacker - and in many cases that can be all you need.

The downside to Boxing for female self defense is it doesn’t involve any leg or foot strikes, close combat grappling, ground fighting, or survival techniques. This lack of an overall self defense curriculum shows that it was created mainly for a regulated sport, and therefore is narrowly-focused for female self defense.
If a woman who trained in Boxing were to be attacked in real life, she would be in a great position to defend herself by striking the attacker and dodging their attacks.
Once you are able to identify the stranger as a legitimate physical threat, your best course of action is to create or maintain distance, and then prepare to use your strikes to maintain distance and stun the aggressor.
A jab or hook to the assailant's face would be a great initial move to stun or incapacitate him. After he has been stunned or incapacitated, you could then flee the scene and call for help. If he is not yet stunned, you may need to throw a more powerful cross or uppercut to fully incapacitate him before fleeing the scene.
Overall, while Boxing has a narrow focus in technique and style, we can’t negate the importance and effectiveness of that single style - punching. Like most of the other martial arts listed above, it’s important to learn a comprehensive self defense program since violent attacks are unpredictable. However, we can say that striking in our opinion is the most important skill to learn for women, and Boxing does a great job of teaching and training women how to punch powerfully and effectively.

Defender Ring Z is our large self defense ring with a heavily requested new feature: a serrated blade.
We have received countless inquiries into the effectiveness of our self defense rings to cut through rope and zip ties. And unfortunately before our latest serrated ring weapons, we were not able to confidently back any claims of their rope or zip tie cutting abilities.
Just to clarify: our other non-serrated ring weapons can easily puncture, pierce, and rip through an attacker’s skin, and other materials.
It’s just this unique ability to saw and cut through a very thin piece of material that it was lacking.
Our team quickly brainstormed adding teeth to the blade in order to create a serrated edge that would be capable to saw through rope or zip ties.
Our serrated blade weapon is 10 mm in length by 4 mm in diameter.
These dimensions are twice the size of our small self defense ring.
At 10 mm x 4 mm, our blade weapon is large with two long edges for sawing through rope or zip ties. But it is small enough to rock as a maximalist statement ring and is not so bulky that you will be walking around with a chainsaw on your finger.
We found this 10 mm x 4 mm dimension to be the most ideal balance of size and convenience.

After you have unscrewed the ring top to arm the blade weapon, simply cut through rope or zip ties like you would if you had a knife or saw.
Press the edge of the serrated blade to the rope or zip tie.
Apply minor pressure to the rope or zip tie and begin moving the blade in an up-and-down motion, while maintaining minor pressure.
The blade will make a small cut into the rope or zip tie which will weaken its integrity at that spot. Continue to saw in a back-and-forth motion on that spot, and soon the rope will begin to fray and separate, or the zip tie will begin to weaken and break.

Let's discuss 8 ways you can help someone being attacked without putting yourself in danger.
The precursor to helping someone else in danger is ensuring you, yourself, are not in danger. If you're in danger, or also in danger, you can't help someone else in need.
Think of the age-old airplane example instructing you to put on your oxygen mask before helping your child put their mask on.
If you put your oxygen mask on first, and your child loses consciousness, you can help them put their mask on them so they regain consciousness.
On the other hand if you put your child's oxygen mask on first, and then you lose consciousness, your child may not be able to assist you in putting your mask on.
Here are some ways to make sure you're not in danger:
Prevention is better than trying to stop something that's already started.
How can you prevent something?
You might see a disorderly gentleman stumbling down the street shouting curse words and racial epithets. He's walking towards an old lady with a cane about a block away. Helping her avoid the situation by walking her across the street or into a store is a great way to prevent a dangerous situation from occurring in the first place. Create a barrier either physical or distance to help keep her safe.
One reason why society is fighting back against recent hate crimes is because we are witnessing them through videos that people take.
Watching an old lady get kicked to the ground and stomped by a man more than twice her size is infuriating and incites change.
So if you don't want to put yourself in physical danger and you have your trusty cell phone, start recording the incident from a safe place.
Contacting the authorities is always a great option.
Physically and legally they can intervene in ways a regular citizen cannot.
Perhaps there are physically fit young individuals who can physically intervene in the situation.
Or someone else can video tape the incident while you call the police.
Involving other people will almost always result in positive results.
When someone sees someone else taking action, that normally prompts them to take action since they're not the first person to do so.
Other people who may have more authority or more resources to intervene are:
Honk your car horn repeatedly. Flash your high beams in the direction of the situation. Shouting. Playing loud music. Throwing things or creating a ruckus.
If it's a life or death situation, anything you can do will help the victim survive.
This might mean driving by the incident in your car and verbally intervening.
Shouting from your home or apartment.
Intervening with a group of people for greater strength in numbers.
While intervening might mean putting yourself into harm's way, there are some safe ways to do it.
If there is nothing you can do while the attack is occurring, you can always try to help afterwards.
Recently three large male security guards chose not to help an elderly woman after she was viciously attacked by a large male assailant.
If you do not want to physically intervene during the attack, or safely help someone else during the attack, the very least human thing to do is to try to assist afterwards.
This includes providing basic first aid, water, notifying the victim that police and medics are on the way, and comforting the victim until authorities arrive.
We need to ensure that all criminals are held accountable and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
If you have eyewitness testimony, cell phone recordings, or surveillance footage of the attack or the time surrounding the attack, make sure you provide it to the police officers.

The Coronavirus has sickened millions and killed hundreds of thousands of innocent people across the world. To this date, over 26 million people have been sickened and over 869,000 people have died from COVID-19.

Countries across the globe have banded together and provided equipment, resources, and aid to one another to fight this common enemy. However there is another enemy that is trying to exploit this global crisis; predators and criminals.
Evil predators and depraved criminals don’t care that this virus can sicken their family members, friends, or even themselves. They callously view the pandemic as an opportunity to carry out their attacks and crimes.
We will forever live in a new normal with the rules and structure of society changing.
Does this mean the rules of self defense have also changed?
Absolutely.
As society changes, the rules of self defense change with it.
There are new social norms including social distancing, wearing face coverings, and working from home. There are unarmed killings of black people, and social protests for police defunding. There are racially motivated attacks on vulnerable Asian populations due to misguided information. And lastly, what’s affecting everyone is a scary uncertainty surrounding how our society will look and function moving forward.
Society has changed and will continue to change throughout this very turbulent time in our history.
Now more than ever you have to watch your own back.
We see social distancing everywhere now. Restaurant tables positioned 6 feet apart and shoppers in line standing 6 feet apart. New York City restaurants cramming 5 adjacent tables within 15 feet will no longer be a thing.
These new social distancing norms can be advantageous for self defence. Everyone must be 6 feet apart and distance is your friend in self defence. This means that you can cross the street if you see someone suspicious approaching you, and it won’t be considered rude. If a strange gentleman is standing too close to you in public, you can move away to create distance and it won’t be offensive.
Distance makes it harder for a predator to harm you physically. Distance gives you time to arm yourself and prepare to fight off an attacker. Distance allows you to observe and evaluate a potential threat. Creating distance can remove you from a potential threat’s vicinity.

Use this new social distancing norm to your advantage. Cross the street, step further away, be blunt and assertive about claiming your 6 feet of personal space, and create distance whenever you feel uncomfortable.
Face coverings are now required in many public spaces and private establishments to reduce the spread of the disease.
While it’s an important safety measure, it also poses additional hazards for personal protection.
Just last year, if someone was wearing a bandana across his face in the middle of the summer, it would raise red flags. Why is this person covering their nose and mouth in such hot weather? It must be to conceal their facial identity so they can commit a crime.
Nowadays, anyone can and should cover their mouth and nose, and it won’t look suspicious. A predator could even wear a full-out mask and we’d give him the benefit of the doubt.
You can be sure that predators and criminals are trying to take advantage of this mandatory concealment so that they can commit crimes without revealing their facial identity.
The only way to combat this additional concealment for predators is to be extra vigilant for other cues and body language. Be on the lookout for odd behavior that seems off and if something doesn’t feel right, always go with your gut.
Companies like Twitter, Square, Facebook, and Shopify are allowing their employees to work from home… for as long as they wish. According to a Stanford study, almost 50% of employees are now working from home and that means less people in the streets, in cities, and in public spaces.

This also means fewer bystanders to help you if you’re being assaulted, more desolate public spaces, and more ideal environments for predators to find victims.
Arm yourself. You probably won’t be leaving your house and out in public as much as you did pre-COVID, so carrying a self defense weapon on your body won’t inconvenience you as much, and you’ll be armed wherever you go.
The best self defense weapons to carry are the ones most appropriate for your situation. If you’re going to the supermarket in the afternoon, bringing a small can of pepper spray or wearing a self defense ring knife will be sufficient. If you’re going for an early morning run, or are walking your dog at night, you should arm yourself with something more lethal such as a knife.
Anyone can agree that the killing of an unarmed human being by a police officer is wrong. This systemic racism has led to global protests. While most have been peaceful, there are a handful of individuals violently protesting, rioting, and looting stores and property.
While everyone should understand and be open to the message being conveyed, we also need to protect ourselves and our property.
At this time you should be hyper aware of large groups of people. There’s something called “mob mentality” where it’s easy for a large group of people to adopt a certain behavior based on others in the group. This can be dangerous if you or your property is targeted. It can quickly turn from one person attacking or robbing you to all of a sudden 30 people doing it. If you’re not actively and peacefully protesting, then you should stay away from protest events.
At least 13 cities in the US have cut funding from their police department budget or reduced the number of police officers. Many more cities will cut budgets in the near future. Protests around the country and world have called for an end to systemic racism and many people believe defunding the police is the start to rectifying this issue with funds being reallocated to social programs.
So far, New York City has cut $1 billion dollars from its 2021 police budget and Los Angeles has cut $150 million from its police funding. San Francisco, Austin, Seattle, Oakland, Baltimore Philadelphia, Portland, Salt Lake City, and even the nation’s capital Washington D.C. have made budget cuts to their police force.
What does this mean for self-defense?
The ideal scenario is the funds that would have gone to police departments will go to social programs like homelessness, mental health services, educational programs, food access, violence prevention, and abortion access.
Investing into these social programs will decrease crime, and hence a robust police force will not be needed.
We support the idea of investing more money into social programs and believe this will have positive, lasting long-term effects.
However, in the short-term, the result will be less armed police officers to serve and protect you. Violence and crime across many major cities is up significantly during the pandemic.
Many people around the United States have reported that their 911 calls are going unanswered and it’s taking police officers a long time to respond to calls.
If it takes a police cruiser 10 minutes to arrive at your house after a 911 call, that is way too long to wait for help to arrive. You have to be able to defend yourself or hold off an attacker until law enforcement arrives.
Your home security should be reinforced which may include things like home firearms or advanced surveillance systems. If we’re going into full prepper mode, you can set up traps, install new locks, wire alarms to windows and entryways, and put up warning signage.
Investing in handcuffs or restraints might be an excellent addition in case you need to restrain an attacker until law enforcement arrives.
We’ve seen Asian individuals being attacked due to their indirect association with COVID-19 and the false belief that they are responsible for the pandemic.
Or we’ve seen cowardly criminals use the pandemic as an excuse to carry out random attacks on Asian individuals.

What we do know is that for the most part, predators are preying on vulnerable populations like the elderly.
These anti-Asian crimes are an ignorant and disturbing trend that is happening all across the nation and are already into the hundreds of cases.
If you’re part of the vulnerable targeted population - Asian elderly individuals - then you need to take extra precautions whenever you leave the house. Asian people in general should be extra cautious when around suspicious individuals.
We suggest being out during the daylight hours and when possible, going out with other people so you are not a single target. If you’re not part of the vulnerable population, it’s your moral duty to help if a dangerous situation were to arise. You don’t have to physically intervene, but you can still call the cops or try to verbally deter the predator.
Life will start to get back to a sense of normalcy, but there’s no time table. It will depend on many factors including the COVID-19 infection rate, a proven vaccine, and each person’s willingness to follow social guidelines to slow the spread.
Your personal protection and safety will be even more important moving forward.

We've received countless emails from young professionals, mothers, college students, male customers, and many more who feel safer, more empowered, and more capable of defending themselves wearing our self defense ring.
Like any customer-facing brand, we interact and correspond with the public on a daily basis. Some prospective customers asked if we could create something scarier. A weapon more intimidating. Less jewelry, more weaponry.
At first we were hesitant to develop this type of new ring.
One of our objectives from the beginning was to create practical self defense weapons. Sure we could mount a Machete to a ring and it would be a formidable weapon, but it would not be practical for people to wear every day.
But we listened and brainstormed, and finally agreed that in this day and age, it was necessary to create another ring that was more ferocious since predators are becoming more determined and brazen as well.
We wanted to create something you could wear on your hand that would be devastating to an attacker.
Based on our original Defender Ring design, we had a few options for making a new self defense ring that would be able to inflict more significant damage to an attacker. The main ways would be to widen the blade weapon, lengthen the blade weapon, or change the blade weapon shape.
Widening the blade weapon would create a larger cross section of impact. Lengthening the blade weapon would create a deeper gouge of impact. Changing the blade weapon shape could increase the pain and/or damage of the impact.
We decided to both widen the diameter and increase the length of the blade weapon to create a larger cross section and a deeper gouge of impact.
Our new Defender Ring X line blade weapon sports a serious 10 mm in length by 4 mm in diameter that is not to be taken lightly.
Everyone who purchases, handles, or sees Defender Ring X in person is shocked and impressed by the ferocious nature of the blade weapon and regards it as a serious weapon.
We wanted to create something with a shock and awe effect that would demonstrate overwhelming power and spectacular displays of force to deter and discourage even the most evil predators.
Defender Ring X does just that with a blade weapon that can cause serious and significant injury to any deserving attacker.
Our original designs for Defender Ring were so popular that we decided to carry most of them over to our X line.
Our sphere designs were easy to carry over, as we just increased the diameter of the spheres to encapsulate the larger blade weapon.
As the X blade weapon is 10 mm in length, we created our Defender Ring X sphere designs at 11.5 mm in diameter. Our Sandblast, Sphere, Stardust and Onyx were our most popular spheres and we decided to include these in our X line.
We also added a pop of color with a new Defender Ring X ring called Cobalt X, which features a deep luminous blue sphere top.
Our initial design for Defender Ring and still the most popular design is our Rose. We of course decided to carry the Rose over to our X line, however we faced some complications with the new size.
The initial Rose design for Defender Ring, simply scaled up to larger dimensions, looked disproportionate and bulky when seen and worn at such a large scale. We realized this Rose design and ring would go against one of our main objectives - creating practical, wearable, minimal jewelry. Therefore we decided to recreate our Rose design specifically for the X line.
Our design team and production team created a beautiful new Rose X design that encapsulates the blade weapon perfectly and looks beautiful as jewelry. You can see a comparison of the Defender Ring Rose and Defender Ring X Rose designs below:
Our self defense rings are unique because of their functionality.
Combining a self defense weapon into the body of a jewelry ring allows us to arm women with a practical, minimal, and quick-arming weapon. This would not be possible without our rings' unique thread mechanism.
Fittingly, there were no significant changes to our original Defender Ring functionality and mechanism.
Our self defense ring still uses a thread mechanism to connect the band and blade to the ring top.
Defender Ring X can be unscrewed in 3 seconds, just like Defender Ring.
One small difference is Defender Ring X requires approximately 2.25 revolutions, while Defender Ring requires 3.25 revolutions. This is simply because Defender Ring X has a larger thread diameter and the top can be unscrewed in less revolutions.

]]>Everyone will experience a dangerous situation in their lifetime.
Your heart starts to beat rapidly, you feel your palms getting sweaty, and the hairs on the back of your neck perk up.
Your natural instinct to survive is kicking in and your body is alerting you that you may have to run or fight.
If you’re in a sticky situation like this, there are things you should do and some things you shouldn’t do.
Today we’ll discuss the most important things you should never do in a dangerous situation.
The worst thing to do in a dangerous situation is panic. Panicking puts your body into a state shock and your reflexes, systems, motor skills, and mental processes are impaired. It negatively impacts every aspect of the situation and decreases your chances of making the right decision and surviving.
Your fine motor skills will become affected making it difficult to hold and use a self defense weapon. You become frantic and rigid which affects your ability to run away or properly fight back. Your body and mind reach a high level of stress, which adversely affects your physical and mental abilities.
So in a dangerous situation, never panic and try to relax, take a deep breath, and properly analyze the situation.
A stranger standing 10 feet away from you can close the distance and reach you in just a couple of seconds.
That’s why you should never take your focus off a potential threat. You don’t have to and shouldn’t constantly hold eye contact and watch his every move - in fact that would be way too obvious!
What you should do is always be aware of a potential threat’s presence and actions. You can stay vigilant by using your peripheral vision, sense of hearing, or simply sensing the situation and environment around you.
If you’re aware of a threat’s presence, and he tries to close the distance between you to attack, your instincts and senses will alert you, and you can use those few seconds to run away, call for help, or prepare to defend yourself.
Your physical well being is worth more than your material possessions. We all work hard to put food on the table and buy nice things for ourselves. And it’s difficult to lose those possessions that we value highly and have worked so hard for. But if there’s a mugger with a knife trying to take your cell phone, do not fight back. Do not hold on to your cell phone and force the mugger to use force to take it from you. Relinquish your cell phone, throw it on the ground, and be happy that you still have your health and life.
Drastic movements can startle a perpetrator and propel him to take action. If a perpetrator has bad intentions, the last thing you want to do is force him into action. Therefore if you’re in a dangerous situation, you shouldn’t immediately run away or reach for your knife. These drastic movements might make a mugger physically attack you even if that wasn’t his plan. Or it might make a predator attack you faster or more violently than he had planned.
You should run away or retrieve your knife after properly evaluating the situation. If the perpetrator is distracted and takes his focus off of you, that might be your only chance to run away and seek help, or retrieve a knife to be prepared to defend yourself. In both cases, you should not do so with drastic or frantic movements. Instead do so with calm and calculated motions.
Turning your back on a potential threat puts you in an unfavorable position.
First, you are not able to fully focus on a potential threat with your back to him since your main sense of vision will be gone.
Second, in an attack, one of the worst positions to be in is with your opponent on your back. Once an opponent has grabbed you or is attacking you from behind, you have a much lower chance of winning or surviving. All of the body’s natural self defense weapons such as our arms, legs, knees, head, and even your mouth are located at the front of your body and operate forward. It would be virtually impossible to defend yourself and survive against a predator attacking you from behind.
Never trust, believe or give the benefit of the doubt to a potential threat. A potential threat can be a service worker at your front door or a stranger outside your car.
If a potential threat asks you to do something that might put you in danger and has a good reason for you to do so, don’t give him the benefit of the doubt and put yourself in danger.
For example let’s say there’s a stranger outside your car who's acting suspicious. If he asks you to open your car door to help him, don’t immediately do so. Evaluate the situation and the first thing you should do is call 911 for assistance. If he’s actually injured, the police would be able to help him more than you could. Be smart and never give the benefit of the doubt to a potential threat.
Predators feed off of fear or weakness in their victims. Predators seek people who look weak or vulnerable because predators are cowardly and weak, and they don’t want to risk losing in a fight. They are insecure and scared themselves, and it’s smart to use this against them.
Kelly Herron, one of the most famous survivors, was able to defend herself against an attacker by fighting back and yelling “not today motherf@&$er!”. Kelly showed no weakness and her physical defensive skills plus her mental fortitude helped save her life that day.
Even in the face of an intimidating enemy, never show weakness or fear.
Just like in poker, never show all the cards in your hand.
This idiom simply means that you don’t want to show your opponent everything you’re capable of doing, or else he will know your full strength and can prepare for your attack.
If you’ve been kidnapped and you have a pocket knife hidden in your pocket, use it wisely. If you just take it out at the first chance you get, you might lose your only opportunity to survive. Instead, wait until your kidnapper lets his guard down, and then seize the opportunity.
Evil people have no rules and no morals. Don’t show him any mercy, because he surely hasn’t and won’t show you any mercy.
For example, if you’re being assaulted and your attacker has an injury like a cast on his arm, try to harm his injured arm. There are no rules when you’re defending yourself in a life or death situation.
If he doesn’t have any visible injuries, go for his groin and private area. Do not worry about his health or that you could be injuring him for life. The moment he made the decision to attack you, he was giving up his rights to his own personal health and well being.
The human spirit is stronger than anything. No matter the situation or the circumstances, never give up fighting. You never know what will happen. Help could be just seconds away. You could strike him in a spot that makes him incapacitated. Always fight till the end.
The best way to survive a dangerous situation is to be prepared for one. Arm yourself with a self defense product. Train with a few basic self defense moves. Learn about the best protective techniques and mindsets to survive a dangerous situation. And in some cases, it’s helpful to know what not to do in a dangerous situation as opposed to what you should do. ]]>Eye contact is one of our main forms of communication and is one of the most important methods of non-verbal communication.
Did you know that you can communicate to a complete stranger that you’re in trouble simply by making eye contact with them and feeling uneasy about a situation?
Similarly you can tell someone you’re romantically interested in them by looking at them in a flattering manner - as long as you're not staring! If you’re talking to someone and his pupils are dilating, it normally means he’s visually stimulated to what he’s looking at.
During a conversation, maintaining good eye contact shows that you’re listening and being an active participant in the conversation even if you aren’t verbally speaking.
The eyes can tell you when someone is lying and trying to deceive you. Neuro-linguistic research shows that when someone looks up and to their right, they are constructing an image in their head from scratch, and therefore lying.
Other deceitful eye cues are when someone blinks rapidly or when someone closes their eyes for long periods of time while telling you something.

There are different elements to eye contact.
Eye contact has physical elements such as the pupils, eyeball, lashes, and brow. It also has elements such as eye contact duration, intensity, motion, and depth.
Each of these elements plays a crucial role in eye contact.
Raising your eyebrows typically shows surprise, shock, or disapproval depending on context.
Fluttering your eyelashes draws attention to the eyes and signals sexual or romantic interest in the person she is making eye contact with.
Holding eye contact with someone for a long duration can signify you want to talk to them. Similarly making eye contact with someone, looking away, and then glancing back at them generally also signifies that you want to talk with them.
Prolonged, intense eye contact can mean that you really hate someone and have an deep anger towards them.
Eye contact can tell you a lot about another person’s mood. Have you ever looked at someone and could quickly tell what they were feeling? This is because the eyes can tell you another person’s mood; whether they’re sad, happy, angry, aroused, surprised, or scared.
It’s easy to tell when someone is sad - their eyes and eyelids are droopy, saggy and baggy. The eye balls might be glazed over from crying or tearing. Their eyes might have a distant or empty look to them. The person might avoid eye contact and lose focus in their eyes easily.
Conversely, you can tell when someone is in a good mood. Their eyes are big, wide open and taking everything in. There’s squinting and crow’s feet wrinkles in the corners from smiling so much. Their cheek bones are raised. There’s a fire inside their eyes.
The eyes do a whole lot for us. And they can also be used to protect yourself in self defense.
The best eye contact for self defense can be no eye contact.
Avoidance of eye contact with a suspicious or dangerous person is generally the best method of self defense.
Since eye contact is normally used for communication, any eye contact with a dangerous person may initiate unnecessary communication with him. He may interpret your glance as an invitation to initiate conversation or become aggressive with you.
Conversely, in some situations, intentional eye contact with a potential aggressor may keep you protected.
Confident, assertive, strong eye contact shows the assailant that you’re not going to be intimidated or an easy victim.
Deliberate and targeted eye contact shows a potential attacker that you acknowledge his presence and will be aware of his actions.
So which is it?
Should you avoid eye contact to not initiate unnecessary communication with a dangerous individual?
Or should you make intentional eye contact to confidently deter a potential aggressor?
In general, if the person doesn’t pose a physical threat, you should avoid eye contact altogether. However if the individual poses an imminent physical threat, you should initiate strong eye contact to deter him.

Finally, eye contact can be used in self defense to signal to a bystander that you need help.
If there is a suspicious man talking to you on the bus, and you see a couple of young gentlemen sitting close-by, look at them and use your eye contact to communicate that you’re uncomfortable.
The bystander may come over, pretend like he knows you, and sit with you or invite you to sit with him. Or at the very least, he will be aware of your situation and if the situation were to escalate, he would be more inclined to intervene.
Even making eye contact with someone who’s not physically able to help you, like an old man, will still be beneficial to your situation. If a suspicious man is talking to you on the bus and making you feel uncomfortable, and there is only an elderly man sitting near you, if you make eye contact with him, at least there is another party now involved in the situation. Maybe he can’t physically intervene and help but he can call others to help or call the police.
Eye contact is a great self defense tool everyone can use. This applies to young, healthy females as well as older, less fit men, and everyone in between. Eye contact is one of our most powerful forms of communication. You can use it to tell someone you’re listening to them, or you can use it to warn a potential aggressor that you’re a confident individual and won’t be an easy target.
If all else fails, eye contact with a bystander will alert them to your dicey situation. In today’s society, we shouldn’t be afraid to ask for help from others if we need it. Most people are compassionate and will try to help. If everyone intervened when they could, we wouldn’t have things like the “bystander effect”, where even though there are many people who can help, no one does because they assume someone else will help. Instead, we should all aim to live by the Golden Rule: “do unto others as you would have them do unto you”

Floral jewelry comes in all shapes and sizes. Some floral jewelry pieces combine various parts of the flower into the jewelry; vines, leaves, and stems are incorporated into the jewelry’s bands and chains.
Flowers are designed by nature beautifully and vibrant, so any floral jewelry will encapsulate elements of a natural flower.
Defender Ring’s current two floral designs are Rose and Plumeria. Rose is our original self defense ring design, and consists of a Rose flower with three layers of petals surrounding a center bulb. The design is beautiful and elegant, but the special element of this self defense jewelry ring is that the rose top conceals the “thorn” of the rose, which is the self defense blade. Naturally, the thorn protects the rose in the wild, and our sharp blade protects the wearer of our self defense ring.
Our Plumeria is our other current floral design and is both simple and pretty, similar to a Plumeria flower found in a floral garden. It consists of a center bulb surrounded by five symmetrical petals and sits beautifully on the finger of the wearer. Plumerias are known for their positive energy and they symbolize life and birth.
Adorning yourself in a wide array of colors is another trending style in 2020. Colorful jewelry represents a playful, youth-like approach to fashion and its bold pops of flavor are hitting it big with designers and models in 2020. Various gemstones, rainbow necklaces, and blended hues are the splash of color that jewelry is evolving into this year.
Later on in 2020, Defender Ring is planning to launch a colorful gemstone series of designs which feature our Defender Ring in various color ring tops. All rings will have the same functionality of our self defense ring knife, however their tops will match many colors of the spectrum.

Defender Ring is a powerful self defense weapon, but it’s primary advantage is that it can be worn as everyday beautiful jewelry. Our team designs our self defense rings to be first and foremost jewelry so women can wear it and be armed all the time.
Our rings follow some of the most modern jewelry trends including pearls, orbs, florals, and colorful jewelry, but we also offer classic 14k gold and rose gold.
While the self defense industry as a whole is relatively stagnant, Defender Ring is not. Look out for new and different styles as we expand and offer a wide range of new designs, patterns, materials, and looks!
